News From San Buenaventura, Mexico

Mike Simpson talked with Raquel Flores on Monday and received the following news. Many members in the church have expressed a desire to follow the Lord in baptism. They will be having a baptismal service in the next few weeks, probably a river baptism and fellowship meal afterwards. They are excited and thankful for that. The church is waiting before they start the process of electing a new pastor. They realize that they do not have the income right now to hire a new pastor—they had it good with Pastor O -- he had his own house and a pension to supplement his income. Besides, he did not complain about his salary, which meant they could pay him whatever the church could afford, which wasn’t much. The church will also have some extra expenses soon: finishing up the fellowship hall behind the church and repairing the church van. This means that Erick will continue to interim until the church can afford a full-time pastor. Angela is due on the 26th of this month. She is feeling well. Please pray for the following: VBS preparation – they will greatly miss us and the encouragement that we always bring; Angela’s health and a safe birth for the new baby; Erick’s health, and wisdom to guide the church in this time; wisdom for the church in regard to timing of new pastor search; maturity of the congregation--that more of them would get involved in the work; for those that will be baptized--that they will be fully committed to the Lord; that the families in the church will be strengthened.

News From San Buenaventura, Mexico

Mike Simpson spoke with Raquel Flores last night, in preparation for his and Chad's trip to Mexico this weekend, and she expressed some needs. Her daughter-in-law, Angela, is 3 months pregnant and in need of maternity clothes. Raquel was not exactly sure of her blouse size, but said she needed size 9 or 10 pants (she is about Tiffany Franklin's height). Also, there is a need for clothes for Raquel's grandson. He is 4, but tall for his age, so size 5 clothes should be great. Their winters are not long, but they're cold, so winter and spring clothes for both would be helpful. If anyone would like to help in these two very practical areas, please bring your donation to the church and get it into Chad's hands. They will be leaving Friday for the border.

News From San Buenaventura, Mexico

Mike Simpson spoke with Raquel Flores several days ago--she is still very much in mourning since Pastor Ovidio passed away. Raquel recognizes that the Lord allowed this pain, and only He can heal it. Her sons have surrounded her with support and so have the church and the community. Christians and Catholics alike have come by the house to express their condolences and to let her know that Pastor O was only well-spoken of in the community. She and the church continue to have services, visit the sick, and hold Bible studies at their mission works. The Baptist Association in Monclova has been sending a preacher every Sunday to fill in till they find a pastor. Lord willing, Bro Chad and Mike will be traveling to San Buena on December 5-8 to offer our condolences and find out how we can help. They have emotional, spiritual, and financial needs (the funeral was costly). Please pray for Bro. Chad and Mike as they make the trip--that they will be sensitive to needs and be able to extend to hem the comfort of the Lord.

From San Buenaventura, Mexico - Prayer Needs:

  • At his last doctor's appointment, Pastor Ovidio Flores was told he needs open-heart surgery. He is waiting word on when they will schedule operation. Raquel is understandably worried. Pray for God's peace, comfort and healing hand.
  • Pastor Ovidio and Raquel send their thanks for your prayers for Alex and his wife. They are drawing closer and even attended church together last Sunday. Please continue praying for their marriage.
  • Patti Sandoval's daughter had her baby and brought him or her (Mike didn't ask which it was!) to the church for dedication. Patti's husband, who has cancer and whom we have prayed for, is getting better. This is a great testimony to his Catholic family.
  • The church van is having electrical problems and needs work. Pastor O has taken it once to the mechanic, but he feels they did more harm than good, and there is really no money for more repairs. Please pray for God's provision for their transportation needs.
  • Please remember Pastor O and Raquel as they conduct Bible studies in two other towns nearby San Buenaventura. Pastor O says that he considers these new works as "missionary ventures supported by FBCLC."

From San Buenaventura, Mexico:

Pastor O sends warm greetings to the team that came in July, and thanks for their labor in the Lord and the generous offering they left--it has been a great blessing. He also asks prayer for the following needs:
  • For his son, Ovidio Jr., and his spiritual condition;
  • For his son, Alex, and his marriage, which is not in good shape right now;
  • For one of the new church members, Brenda. She was one of the teachers at this year's VBS. She and her husband have been separated for several months and he is providing no child support. She is filing for divorce because he was caught in adultery;
  • For Daniel, the son of a lady who has just started coming to church. Daniel and his wife are trying to start a family and have been unable to conceive;
  • For Benito, a father recently saved during one of Primera Iglesia's outreaches in a nearby town. His family had already come to know Christ and this was an answer to prayer;
  • Follow-up and outreach that the church is doing. The church has a master list of all the registered attendees at this year's VBS and has assigned to each member of the church various families to visit and encourage.

Update by Mike Simpson

Mike Simpson spoke with Pastor Ovidio and Raquel last night and they have the following needs and praises.
  • Alex and his wife are attending church in the city where Alex is going to college, and they seem to be growing in the Lord (which has been a long time coming).
  • Erick is still commuting to his teaching job four hours away and coming home on the weekends to work with the youth at the church and help with evangelism. He has had stomach problems of late and requests prayers.
  • Ovidio Jr. is still working nights and helping out at home and at the church, but has very little interest in spiritual matters. Pray for him that the Lord will warm his heart and draw him to Himself.
  • Pastor O and Raquel will be teaching a mini-seminar on marriage on Saturday the 26th. They request prayer for wisdom and for open hearts among the couples that attend.
  • The area has not had much rain this year and the farmers and ranchers are getting worried. Pray for rain.
  • The church is working on the fellowship hall behind the sanctuary and requests prayer that the building will be completed by July when our team goes.
